The Satchwell One-Name Study

Welcome to the site that documents the history of the Satchwell, Satchwill, Satchell and Satchel surnames.

In essence, One-Name Studies are all about collecting and analysing all data to do with one surname or its variants. Work on the Satchwells began in 1984 and this, together with work on the Satchwills is in a mature state. The study is now being extended to the variant spellings Satchell and Satchel.

If you are interested in the history of these surnames, if from the UK, it would help if you have details of your ancestor a little over 100 years ago, in 1921 or 1911. Use the GRO-Births or the 1921 or 1911 Census table to find your ancestor, then look across at the right hand column for the name of the Pedigree Chart they are on.  It is not possible to search all charts together. Charts are referred to in Census, Parish Registers and GRO Indexes in the rightmost column of those tables.

If you have any information on non-living Satchwells, please also get in touch via the Contact page. Please make it clear whether or not this would be for publication. Any photographs of non-living Satchwells would also be appreciated – again please make it clear whether or not you would be happy for them to be published.

We also have a private Facebook group where we discuss our findings – please ask to be added.

Enjoy using the site, and if helping with research, happy hunting!

Michael Satchwell June 2023.

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts – Sherlock Holmes
